Hey guys I'm back with an actual review. If you read my blog you'll know I just posted a wrap-up of all the books I read the past months. Now I'm back to writing separate reviews. It feels good to be back. Today I am reviewing "Fire & Flood" by Victoria Scott. This book was really good. I was actually in a reading slump the past week and thankfully, this book got me out of my reading slump, yay! Now I can read again and this book was awesome! Let's get on to the review!

The Plot

Fire & Flood is about a sixteen year-old girl named Tella. Tella's brother, Cody is sick and the doctor's can't find a cure for him so her family moves to Montana where she has to start over with her life. One day she gets a weird message explaining how to become a "Contender" for the "Brimstone Bleed". It's a event sort of like "The Hunger Games" where you have to survive and fight to the death. At first Tella isn't interested. Then she finds out if you win the Brimstone Bleed, you get a cure to help any illness so Tella wants to enter so she can save her brother. It's a huge race that takes place in the desert, jungle and more. Tella runs away and participates in the race. She meets some people and they become her friends. The question is, can she trust the people there? Can she win the race? You'll have to read the book to find out.

My Opinion

Like I said before, this book was really good! I'm not a fan of dystopian books but I actually liked this one. This book gets compared to "The Hunger Games" but I don't really see it. I mean the whole fight to the death part is similar but it takes place in different places and it's actually very original. This book is a little different because when you start the race, you get a Pandora. A Pandora is a creature/animal that helps you throughout the race. I thought that was so cool! I'm going to talk about the characters now. I really liked the characters. One of the reasons why I loved this book is because the character development is so good in this book. I liked the main character, Tella. She's strong but she's also relatable. She didn't really know how to survive and I can relate to that because if I was stranded, I wouldn't know what to do. I loved all of her friends/allies. I loved Harper, Caroline and Guy. He is Tella's love interest. This book has some romance in it but not too much. Guy was a good, strong character. At first he comes off as mean but as you read the book, he becomes a nicer person.
I thought the writing was good. When I read books, I don't really pay attention to how good the writing is so it doesn't really matter to me. The plot was so cool and original. Like I said before, I loved the Pandora's. I have to say, the pacing was really fast in this book. I really liked that. You get thrown into the race after the first couple of chapters. You get to experience it with Tella because it's in first person. I'll give you a warning that there's no world building in this book. Honestly, I hate world building in books. That's one of the reasons why I hate dystopian books. That's why I loved this book because there was no world building so it wasn't confusing.
Overall, I really loved this book. I highly recommend everyone to read this not only because it's good and entertaining but it's actually an underrated book in my opinion. Everyone talks about the more popular dystopians but I really recommend this one. The second book "Salt & Stone" is out so hopefully I can buy that one soon.
I think this book is worth a buy and that was my review. Thank you so much for reading and I will have more posts up soon.  Bye!
