Bitter End Book Review

Beware of Spoilers!!!

Okay what to say about this book. Hmm. Let's get started! Recently I went to the library to pick out a book. "Bitter End" by Jennifer Brown was on my list for a while. I found the book at the library and thought I should read it. First of all I have to say this book was a lot darker than I thought it would be. I thought I was picking up a cute love story. I read the reviews for this book, and the reviews were really good so I had high hopes. I gave this book 3 stars on goodreads.  My opinion changed throughout the book.

This book wasn't great or amazing, but it wasn't the worst book I've read. I put off reading it for a while because I was reading another book. I had to renew this book from the library so I had to read the whole book yesterday because the book was due today. This book wasn't a book that bored me, but I put it down a lot. Here's the plot of the book:

He'd never told me he loved me before. Nobody had ever told me they loved me before.

So this book is different from others books I've read. The story is about a seventeen year old girl named Alex. She is a senior in high school. She doesn't believe in love or relationships. Her mom died when she was younger, and she isn't close to her dad. Her dad never got over his wife's death and neither did Alex, even though she was too young to remember her mom. Alex has an older sister and a younger sister, and she isn't close to them either. She has two best friends named Bethany and Zack. They lived next door to each other since they were little. They always called themselves the "Terrible Three". Every thing was going okay in Alex's life until one mysterious boy comes in her life. (This part is very predictable and is overused in other novels.) This guy named Cole moves to a new town and goes to Alex's school. She becomes his tutor and they get to know each other. I think you know what happens next. Alex falls in love with him and Cole feels the same about her. After awhile their relationship grows and Alex experiences something she never thought would happen to her. Later in the story she discovers that Cole has a bad reputation. He abuses girls he dates. The reason why he moves to a new town is because of his reputation. Alex meets a girl who was also a victim to Cole's anger problems. Alex gets hurt and doesn't know what to do.

My opinion:

To me this book just wasn't good. The writing wasn't awful but wasn't great. I liked how the author wrote about a very important topic. I also didn't like it because it made me feel uncomfortable. When I first started reading this book, I really liked it. When Cole first comes into the picture I was rooting for him and Alex. I felt their relationship was a little rushed. I felt that this book dragged on and on. Alex kept getting abused and then Cole would apologize and tell her he loved her and it goes on and on. The same thing kept happening. It was obvious that Cole was going to keep on hurting her. Throughout this book I kept shaking my head at the main character. She was so stupid. You don't know how many times I kept screaming "Just dump him already!" She was so dumb for wanting to stay with him. I hated Cole. I liked him in the beginning but once he got jealous, I hated him. He was so mean to Alex's friends. Bethany was trying to be supportive and Cole yelled at her. Also I felt so bad for Zack too. Zack is the kind of guy who normally likes everyone but he hated Cole ever since he met him. You can tell Cole is not a good guy because Zack hates him. Cole kept getting so mad that Alex was always hanging with her friends. He got so mad when he saw her hanging or talking to Zack. Okay, I understand that he doesn't want his girlfriend to hang with another guy, but he went too far. Zack is just a friend to Alex. Cole kept telling Alex that Zack is in love with her, but Alex told him they are just friends. I felt so bad for Bethany and Zack. The reason why I gave this book 3 stars is because of her friends. I really liked Zack. He is cool and funny and kept standing up for Alex. I liked Bethany too.  I also gave this book 3 stars because of Georgia. Georgia is the manager of the restaurant where Alex works. She treats Alex like a good mom and that's what Alex needs. I liked her.  I kept waiting and waiting for her to stand up to Cole. Cole is such a jerk. Even when he was nice to Alex after hitting her, I didn't believe it. I liked the ending. I thought I was going to like this book, but it was a huge disappointment to me. I like some realistic fiction but this book just wasn't good. I didn't read the author's other book, so I can't compare the two. If you want to read this, I guess I could recommend it. If you're comfortable with reading about abuse then you should read it. If you're like me who doesn't like reading about depressing parts of life, then don't get this book.
